Actually, although the Báthori family had connections with Transylvania (Which at times was part of the Hungarian Empire), Erzsébet Báthory was born on 17 August 1560 in Nyírbátor in Hungary, north-east of present day Romania. She spent her adult life in Csejte vára (?achtice Castle), further north-east in present day Slovakia. The castle ruins survive to this day, a in beautiful landscape and surrounded by many rare varieties of wild flowers.

Several male members of her familiy had at various times been Voivods (rulers) of Transylvania, including her paternal uncle Andrew Bonaventura Báthory.
