The Perfect 10 GirlShow

All I have to say is…One hell of a get together. Thrown by Deb Driscoll for female artists and enjoyed by all. It was my first time going to the GirlShow and I can definitely say that it will not be my last. The 2010 show was held at Life in Deep Ellum, a culture spot for the arts, and all sorts of artists came out to the event. The color purple was the “color of the day,” And of course I came rocking the theme. I am all about themes. Spraying my locks purple-well white first to counter the dark black my hair was and then purple-Thank goodness I had all colors of hair spray on hand from last Halloween. After soaking my ends in the mixed colors, I dabbed on some eye makeup and eventually headed out the door.art5

Earlier in the week I had told my friend about the show and she decided to partake as well. We met up on commerce and made our way down to Taylor Street to a place called Life in Deep Ellum, where the GirlShow was being held. When we pulled up to the building we really did not know if we were going to stay the full 8pm-12. We had to circle the street and parking lot at least three times until we finally stumbled upon a suitable place. Then we went in and our whole attitude changed. It was like a big ass coffee shop with all things great in it. The many different artists at the event were nothing less than amazing. Especially when it came to the creative types they were and the how and what they spun when they released their energy.

There was a glass artist, a face painter, pencil artist, eclectic and eccentric pieces, peculiar displays and things that make you go hum… The first place my friend and I went was, as mentioned before, the coffee shop. There, seated at the very front manning-or womanning- her table of creative treasures was a gorgeous red head with tats from her neck to her feet.  From rings, necklaces and all sorts of interesting doo-hickies, she had them. And I had to get a picture of her. portfolio-22332See, what I tell you, beautiful right?

Among the plethora of coffees and teas that the coffee shop offered was a display area showing off some works by Denise Houser- Huff.  This lady was super cool. She let us take pictures and draw on one. Can you guess what beautiful addition I added to this canvas? After she saw my talents in the eye department, let’s just, I got my first makeup client. Of course I had to let her know that I am not a professional and by offering her face as my canvas, well, I couldn’t be held responsible for the outcome.

After slowing down for a moment to see what it felt like to be the artist, we ventured into the other part of the coffee shop. art12A room in the back that was darkened and the only lights coming from it were dim- to fit the mood- and a huge lighted heart-ish symbol that we kept seeing everywhere in different forms. On long, comfy sofas people sat, watching as singers and poets took their turns at the mic. No sporadic drumbeats and finger snapping here! These artists had something to say and whether it was sung or said, they were powerful in their deliverance.

Out in the grand hall, artists and photographers displayed their work or were busily conjuring up new, beautiful pieces while still having time to stop for a photo or have fun and laugh it up with fam, friends and fellow art lovers. Speaking of working on new things check out the massive, curiously striking canvas this girl is working with!

Photography anyone? Well take your pick. There were several photographers roaming the event as well as set up to do work for those who were ready.  Each of them had their own sophisticated camera ready to take photos at whatever called to them. Oh and I had to get a photo with her. portfolio-224Don’t you just love the hair? She was even nice enough to take a do-over the next time I saw her because my first one didn’t turn out to my liking.

Oh and speaking of hair- I went around snapping photo’s of the quirkiest, prettiest, creativest- is that a word- hair I could find. Check out my beautiful people photo gallery on the home page. As we finally made or way further in- way in the back where the bulk of the show was-we came upon a beautiful entourage of girls from Assassination City Roller Derby!

Derby Girls!

They were the nicest girls who would ever think they roll around on skates aiming to kick someone’s ass- just for fun. Fashion, music and more art! In the big room, after passing up a large wall of art drawn by those who were not a part of the show, which we enthusiastically helped ourselves to, we found ourselves basking in the glory of a face painter, jewelry makers, cosmetic creators and a huge stage for the girl rockers to rock out on. (Check the video.)

My favorite one and I can’t wait until she finishes it so I can call dibs on it.

We saw our first-and I think-only designer in this room standing next to her line of clothing.

From the eclectic to the, just-want-to-lie-in-my-bed-with-this-sexy-see-through-gown-on, she had something for everybody. And the prices were more than just right, the aforementioned gown- $20. It reminded me of a 1950’s gown, something you would take a picture in Black and White in. As you can see when I saw it my mind immediately went to photo shoot.

In one area of the room a lady was busily cutting away at shirts, a regular Edwina Scissorhands, she cut them all types of ways. Every person I saw wearing one had different cuts in different areas. Some were 80’s style off the shoulder and others where triple threats- cut in three different ways.

Unfortunately I couldn’t fit everything we saw and did there in this article, but I included additional photo’s and hopefully, when another GirlShow rolls around you will look back on this piece that I wrote and remember what a blast it was for us and in turn go yourself. As I stated before, when we first got there we really had no clue if it would be something we would stay for, however, I am super glad we did. It was well worth it and if I could rate this event, I would give it- A perfect 10.
